Determine if CPU or Mobo is faulty pc building site custom pc builder

I assembled my build last week and everything was working perfectly. When i was turning it on yestertay the fans started, and the CPU LED was on, and it did not post. Through troubleshooting with the help of people from /buildapc, i have determined that it is either the CPU or the mobo that is faulty. Is there anyway to know which is the faulty part?

I'm going to replace all the stock fans on the x62 and h440 with Noctua fans, but i dont really know what the optimal setup for fans and radiator would be, im thinking that the radiator should atleast be mounted at the top? I don't really have a clue when it comes to cooling, so would i would appreciate the help.

Hi

I'm doing a new build. Everything is new. I have not done this for a few years and have run into a problem. Currently the mobo is on top of the cardboard box, cpu and CPU cooler installed and the power is connected. The usb and on/off cable are wired from the case to the mobo. When I turn it on my fans move just slightly and the red led on the mobo for "CPU not found/CPU not detected" flashes for less than half a second. If I turn it off and on there is nothing. If I leave it off for one minute and try again the fans spin just slightly and the led flashes briefly.

I have tried this with 1 stick of ram in each of the 4 slots and no ram installed. I have tried with RAM in slots 1+3 as manual shows. I have tried with and without a GPU + SATA drive installed as well. Same result

I have carefully read the motherboard owners manual.

I have 2* 4 pin connectors going into the CPU power connector and the CPU fan cooler is plugged into the CPU fan pins next to the CPU. Same result

I have tried plugging the Intel stock cooler into the CPU fan pins next to the CPU. Same result

I have the 24pin motherbaord power installed via 20+4 cable. All the power cables came with the CPU.

I have removed the BIOS battery for 2 minutes and reinstalled . No improvment.

I have removed the CPU cooler, cleaned the thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol and coffee fiters, reseated the CPU, applied new thermal paste, reinstalled the cooler and have the same results. The pins looked fine, but there are really small however when looking from the side they all followed the same pattern so I don't think any are bent.

I would have thought that even if the CPU is the problem the fans would keep spinning. I have tried connecting case fans to the fan pins on the mobo and they also only spin for a fraction of a second. My HDD has a SATA power cable to the PSU but it does not spin up either.

Any thoughts? Thanks

I'm coming back to France after a year abroad and playing on a laptop and looking for a build to replace my old rig. It's pretty close to being finished, but I wanted to know your thoughts on it, and if optimizations can be made. Also I really like that case because of the handles : https://pcpartpicker.com/product/WT8Zxr/cooler-master-case-rc902xbkkn2 but I'm worried about airflow in that one, do anyone know if that's a good case ? Thank you all

Building a Gaming Rig after 5 years. Looking for inputs from the masters. :) pc building site custom pc builder

Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Mostly, gaming on highest settings on a 1080p screen with 144hz. I would also like it to be able to record and stream games without breaking a sweat.

The more future-proof, the better. Though I understand tech changes rapidly.

I recently snatched up Gigabyte GTX 1080 8GB AORUS Xtreme for 46k INR, which is a pretty sweet deal for me. I was looking at 1070s before in that budget.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

My current budget is USD 2000. Or INR 130,000. I could stretch it a bit.

Currently, I am opting for a smaller screen. But in future, I think I would want to update to something bigger and better. Any suggestions on monitors that would complement this build well are also welcome.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Buying everything in India. Though I got the graphics card from Newegg US. Even with import duty, it was a better deal that the current market prices in India.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please).

I have done some research and came up with the following list:

Ryzen high temps? pc building site custom pc builder

I recently installed the r7 1700 into my system with the MSI B350 PC Mate motherboard and 3200 mhz corsair LPX ram, and find that with my overclock, which is only 1.3v 3.8ghz,my temps go up to 85c in continuous cinebench runs. My cooler is the cryorig h7,and I reseated it to make sure it wasn't a bad cooler install. Another thing to take note of is my climate, as I live in Arizona where my ambient temp is around 29 celsius. My airflow in my case is also already good. Any ideas to help or am I SOL on temps?

Windows 10 keeps breaking my sound card drivers. pc building site custom pc builder

A few days ago, Windows 10 had an update for me, which I installed as per usual. Ever since then, my sound card (Sound Blaster Z) will not output a signal through any of its outputs. Windows device manager doesn't show any errors. Deleting the drivers and restarting my pc fixes the problem, but the next time I shut down my pc, windows will update again, and I have to repeat the process. I've tried searching for solutions online, but my google-fu apparently isn't up to snuff.

So I bought a modmic 5 but plugged in the sound was saturated and very low with static noice, ofc i didnt have a driver. So I installed the driver recommended by MSI on their website for my MB. Sound is much better, no static noice voice is clear all that.

However new problem, the sound stops being recorded after 3 seconds. Like I start a sentence only the first 2 words come in and the rest just doesn't get catched by the mic.

Tried uninstalling the drivers, it now recordes fully but again, saturated with static noise and low volume, back at ground base...

any help is amazingly appreciated

Looking for a new CPU for my RX 480 pc building site custom pc builder

Hello,

I bought a RX 480 8GB back in january. Now I want to upgrade my CPU.

I found a good deal for a R5 1600X and a ASUS Prime B350-plus mainboard.

What I need is RAM and a CPU cooler. Can you suggest something that matches my setup? I found the be quiet! Pure Rock Slim cooler and think it could work in this setup.

I play games like Dota 2, Bf 1, Overwatch and some newer stuff in 2560x1080. Since my monitor can go up to 144Hz I would like to achieve high framerates.

Further I would like to keep my power supply. It's a be quiet! pure power 530W. Does it supply enough power for the whole system?

Please let me know if you have any other suggestion.

Thanks so far!

Looking for a new ITX case, hope somebody can recommend one based on my criteria:

1) Full size PSU and GPU support

2) window (doesn't have to be tempered glass)

3) enough GPU clearance for it to not choke to death

Pre-built at about same price as how I would build it, it seems pc building site custom pc builder

I recently found this pre-built, which seems to be at around the same price if I would buy the parts separately and then assemble it myself.

This surprised me, so I'd like to know what the catch is.

For the specs, scroll down and click "Toon specificaties".

Note that prices in Belgium may be a bit higher than what you are used to in the States and include tax.

Upgrade Help pc building site custom pc builder

Hello,

I built my rig a couple of years ago and it has been great, my most recent upgrade was a gtx 1080. my target is 144 fps @ 1080p. my processor appears to be the main bottleneck preventing me from hitting 144 fps in most games. The bottleneck is found in games like GTA 5, Ghost Recon Wild Lands and other bigger AAA games, my FPS is almost capped at under 100 fps with my current processor.what is the best upgrade course?

Should I save up and buy a 7700k with new mobo, cooler and ram? Should I buy an old 4790k with cooler and mobo? Would the new Ryzen chips from AMD be good for the bottleneck elimination that I need?

Thanks in advance!

Upgrading CPU and Motherboard pc building site custom pc builder

Hello!

So I've got a question for you guys, on how much I can upgrade the PC I have. Unbeknownst to me I thought that buying a new graphics card would solve most of my problems, but it did not. I upgraded from a 660ti to a Asus Dual GeForce GTX 1060, but it seems like I really could use a new CPU, seeing how slow my computer still is, and how its really fighting with newer games. I've been looking around at various upgrade kits, however, all of the ones I've looked at seems to include both a mothercard and RAM, so Im wondering, is it necessary to upgrade everything at once, or could I just upgrade my CPU and be happy with it? And how do I know if the one I buy will be compatible with my computer?

The computer I have is a https://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?e=1459556 (Really sorry for the site being in swedish, but I figured since the components dont really have to be translated it'd be easier just to do that, however I'd be happy to translate or answer any questions if you have any)

Intel Socket 1155

Intel Core i5 3350P 3,1 GHz

DDR3 8GB

So do you guys think it'd be worth it to buy one of the upgrade kits? Or is my computer so far behind that it'd be more worth it to just build a new one from scratch? I'll gladly take all the help I can get since Im pretty much clueless when it comes to this..

Thanks!

BIOS Confusion pc building site custom pc builder

I have a M.2 NVME drive. I also have a 3TB HDD. I kid you not. When I click the 3TB HDD bios boot override it boots on my M.2 NVME drive. Why do I say that? It boots in about 2 seconds (which is definitely not possible with a 7200 RPM drive with fast boot disabled). What the heck is going on?

Mini ITX 1080 + 7600K pc building site custom pc builder

Hi everyone, I'll be using this for gaming, music production, and scientific work.

Music Production: Does anyone know if there is any advantage as far as VST use in upgrading to a 7700 or something else? I use Reason with a variety of different plugins, and am currently running into CPU throttling with my gaming laptop from a few years ago (lenovo y510p). Note I am using an external audio interface so have no need for "audio" features in the motherboard.

Scientific Work: This is why I want the 32 gigs of ram, more space to store huge arrays.

Gaming: Currently only have 1080 screens, but hope to move towards high resolutions and refresh rates in the future. I essentially want to have a build that is as future proof as possible, and due to all the mining it seems getting a 1070 does not offer enough savings to justify the downgrade.

My budget is flexible, I'd like to keep it well under 2000, my total purchasing on mindfactory is 1766 euros right now (I am based in germany).

I'm sure the NVMe ssd is a bit overkill, but I like the idea of having it. Should I be considering Ryzen? Is the somewhat unknown graphics card a liability? (KFA2, known as GALAX in other countries). I would definitely like to overclock the CPU (I've been told single core clock speed is important for audio production)

Space Issues: It looks like everything will be a tight fit, but based on looking on pcpartpicker for people with similiar builds I do think everything will fit, opinions are welcome.

The Build (direct link to the full shopping cart on mindfactory)

Selling 2 yr. old gaming desktop, need advice pc building site custom pc builder

All of the computer components are 2.5 years old, except for the GTX 780 which is 5 months old. It's capable of running almost any game above 60fps. Most games released before 2017 can do so while running on Ultra. I've run games like Battlefield 1, Battlefront, DayZ Standalone, Chivalry, and other graphically demanding games with ease. Everything is in good condition, the computer has been dusted and given proper ventilation it's entire lifetime. The NZXT case offers lots of room for component improvement or rearrangement. Specs at bottom of post. I'm looking to sell this computer, but need help in evaluating it's worth. I'd love to sell it to someone on these forums, so if you're within driving distance of Orem, UT let me know. Anyways I'm curious on what the best option would be: Sell everything listed in 1 big package with 1 price Sell the SSD, monitor, and peripherals individually, sell the build separately Also: Should I try to get an upgrade to Windows 10? Would it make it more of an incentive for people? r5 1600 or old Xeon processor pc building site custom pc builder

Hi,

I want to upgrade my fx6350@4.6ghz/r9 280x pc to play AAA games at 1440p@60fps at Ultra settings, I also intend to do heavy multitasking, compiling code and virtualisation.

So I was thinking about getting an R5 1600 with a gtx 1070. I have read that RAM is very important on Ryzen, so I want my ram to be 16gb@3000hz but it seems that that is very complicated with the current BIOS of motherbords not supporting it.

So I thought what if I buy an old Xeon processor something like a X5650 or an engineering sample of an i7. It will be cheaper and server ram is also very cheap. But will buying an old Xeon hold up with my demands? Or is it better to buy an Ryzen?

I use Linux as my main OS and have a max budget of €1K ( combining CPU, RAM, MOBO, Case, GPU and PSU) (cheaper is better)

Cryorig C7 cant cool my i7 6700k at stock clocks. pc building site custom pc builder

Troubleshooting Help:

I build a setup with a Fractal design node 202 - with 16 gb ram, core i7 6700k and some decent case coolers. I tried this with a stock cooler where the CPU temperature reached near 100C.

I then switched the setup from a stock i7 cooler to a Cryorig C7 cooler - which did not do anything. I tried replacing the case to a fractal design node 605 - still near 100C when full load.

I have downclocked it to 3,5ghz atm to compensate.

CPU cooler is running at the expected max 2600 rpm. There was enough cooler paste.

Where do you think the problem is? Anything I can try before replacing the cooler yet again?

A build for professional music production and some gaming, no experience on building before pc building site custom pc builder

Build Help:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I intend to use the build for CPU-heavy music production, and the build should be weighted on processor speed rather than multi-core because of audio work. At least four cores seems to be the optimal for now.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Just 1920 x 1080 gaming, preferably with an IPS screen. Maybe getting a second monitor in the future. I would prefer 60 fps, but the GPU isn't that important for me.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

1500-2000 euros is my estimate, sure if the perfect build goes over by 200€, i might be persuaded.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Finland (or Europe in general)

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I chose 32gb RAM just for bigger sound libraries (can get very RAM-hungry) and the power for playing it safe but i don't know if the power is too big. The PCPP list is close to the build I have compiled on www.jimms.fi, and the overall price there is around 1900€.

EDIT:

I do consider overclocking as an option to get more power but the cooling shouldn't be too loud for acoustic purposes. I thought that the NVMe would be the booting drive and using an external hard drive (3TB) for storing media.

I have a laptop that i've been using for work, but an upgrade would be nice:

ASUS N56J series

  • i7-4710HQ (up to 3,5Ghz, 4-core. cooling not good enough for consistent 3,5Ghz)
  • 8 GB RAM 2400Mhz DDR3 (upgraded)
  • NVIDIA GTX 850M 2GB DDR3
  • OCZ ~500gb SSD (upgraded)

If anyone knows anything about external soundcards, I have a Focusrite 2i2 2nd Gen and the next card I'm getting is going to be an Apollo Twin/Quad USB.
