Are PSU connectors proprietary? Need 8pin to sata connector pc building site custom pc builder

A friend of mine gave me his Thermaltake TR2 RX (W0319) without any cables at all. I was looking online and from I can see I need to get two "8pin to SATA connectors" so that I can power up my HDD and SSD, but when I went to my local computer store to get something similar to this:

https://www.amazon.ca/StarTech-com-SATPCIEX8ADP-6-Inch-Express-Adapter/dp/B007Y8FSMQ

I was told that cable wouldn't work as PSU cables are normally proprietary to the PSU brand, is this true at all? Would I lose my money if I were to buy that cable?

This is the PSU in question : https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153106
