Is 1080ti really an overkill for 1080p 144hz? pc building site custom pc builder

I'm browsing this subreddit for few months now getting ready to build my new PC soon. I have few questions but this one is defining the rest of the build so here it is:

Is 1080ti really an overkill for 1080p 144hz?

Considering following assumptions for the build:

  • build should last 4-5 years without upgrades
  • AAA games (Battlefields, Witcher 3, Total War: WH and so on) on highest settings
  • maintaining FPS close to 144hz
  • it will pair with g-sync monitor

Bonus objectives:

  • preferably no OC on neither CPU or GPU
  • keeping PC cool and quiet so preferably not straining the parts

Considering the above, I was browsing this subreddit, reading testes and benchmarks. It seems that consensus on /r/buildapc is that 1080ti is an exclusively 1440p 144hz card (or 4k 60fps one). BUT looking at tests, 1080ti can go below 100 fps in more demanding games at 1440p. In some cases it gets dangerously close to 60 fps.

So again my question to you: is 1080ti really an overkill for 1080p 144hz?
