STR Chart for Gaming with Ryzen pc building site custom pc builder

Note: I am neither Team Intel nor Team AMD, I just buy what is the best bang-for-the-buck in performance that is within my budget. #TeamLinus

My Rating for Gaming with Ryzen:

(Single Thread Rating [STR] points are from CPUBenchmark.net on 27 July 2017) $$ Prices from Amazon.com on 27 July 2017 $$

My Choice?

Ryzen 5 1600X

The Ryzen 5 1600X is manufactured from the same die as the Ryzen 7 1800X with a few cores disabled{1}, that's why the Single-Thread Rating is nearly identical. A layperson might assume that the Ryzen 7 1700X is one step below the 1800X in terms of gaming, but in reality it is two steps below (1500X has slightly better STR performance than the 1700X). If you really want Ryzen for gaming, choose the Ryzen 5 1600X, else go with a i7-7700K for only $101 more. I personnally don't think >>for gaming<< it's not worth paying $420 for a Ryzen 7 1800X with a 1956 STR, when the i7-7700k blows it out of the water in both price & performance ($338 with a 2575 STR).

I would be inclined to choose Ryzen over Kabylake for both effiency/power and the AM4 socket. AMD has stated that they will keep the AM4 socket to include the future Zen 2 & Zen 3 processors{2}, while Intel has had the LGA1151 socket for some time (since Q3 2015{3}) and I'd assume they will change it up in the near future since they change chipsets every 2-3 years. So this last point isn't "future proofing" but more of keeping my options open to possibly reuse the same board in the future if I went with Ryzen.
